    Legendary Spanish Actress Passes Away at the Age of 78

    Born in Madrid, the Spanish actress Marisa Paredes started her career in 1960. She performed in well over 100 films and received countless awards.

    Throughout her career, she worked with directors like Fernando Trueba on ÓPERA PRIMA (1980), Agustí Villaronga on A GLASS CAGE (1986), Roberto Benigni on LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (1998) and Guillermo del Toro on THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE (2001), to name but a few.

    Outside of Spain, she is particularly known for her repeated collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar. She appeared as Sister Estiercol in DARK HABITS (1983), about a nightclub singer seeking refuge with gay nuns on dope in a Madrid convent. In HIGH HEELS (1991), she was Becky del Páramo alongside Victoria Abril.

    She was nominated for the Spanish Goya Awards for her role as Leo in THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET (1995), for which she also received the Best Actress award in Karlovy Vary.

    In ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (1999 ) she was Huma Rojo alongside Cecilia Roth, in THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011) she played Marilia, alongside Elena Anaya and Antonio Banderas.

    Marisa Paredes received the Honorary Spike award at the  Valladolid Film Festival in 2017 and an Honorary Goya in 2018.

    From the year 2000 to 2003 she was the president of the Spanish Academy of Cinematografic Arts and Sciences.

    Marisa Paredes died on 17 December 2024. We will miss her.
