The European Film Academy introduces member chapters for the arts and crafts of filmmaking

FOCAL participant Laura Morales and Academy member and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema

Members of the European Film Academy who work as casting director, cinematographer, composer, costume designer, editor, make-up & hair artist, production designer, or sound designer will now be automatically assigned to a corresponding chapter. The European Film Academy introduces these first chapters to enhance its programme for individual members, help members to engage more with peers and increase the visibility of these fields of work specifically. This is based on board decisions of the European Film Academy.

As of 2025, members of the afore-mentioned chapters will be able to vote for three nominations for the awards “European Cinematographer”, “European Composer (Original Score)”, “European Costume Designer”, “European Editor”, “European Make-up & Hair Artist”, “European Production Designer”, “European Sound Designer”, and the newly introduced category “European Casting Director”. This replaces the procedures for the European Excellence Awards 2024 which have been presented at the European Film Awards 2024 for the last time. In the future all Academy members will be asked to vote for the winners in these categories.

The chapter for visual effects supervisors (VFX) will be installed as soon as a minimum of 50 members have registered as an Academy member. The European Film Academy will encourage its members to recommend suitable VFX designers while also inviting VFX professionals to join the Academy. Once the chapter is established, the members can vote for nominees for “European Visual Effects.”

CEO and Academy Director Matthijs Wouter Knol: “The community of Academy members will become more and more the focus of our work. This new step marks an important change in our engagement with Academy members. As an organisation bringing people across Europe together in all our work, forming chapters will help us to be more effective and create more impact and attention for the arts and crafts the European film community excels in. We are also following the example of other academies. I believe the Academy chapters will give more recognition to these crucial groups of film professionals and will enable members to support each other better.”

The chapter categories mentioned are the first ones, and the European Film Academy expects to gradually extend the list of chapters in the years to follow. The building process of the chapters will take time and will be done with the involvement of the respective members. All chapters of the European Film Academy will have a minimum of 50 members. Principals for each of the first new chapters will be elected by registered chapter members later in 2025.

The European Film Academy will actively reach out to European and national associations of film related arts and crafts professionals and aims to work more closely together with each of them in the upcoming years.
