Together with the mBank New Horizons IFF, the European Film Academy has been presenting a special version of A SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY for young film critics & journalists. In 2023, it took place for the 12th time, again bringing eight participants to the Polish countryside for an extended weekend of screenings and discussions.

They spent the days watching films and discussing them, cinema and cinephilia in general, and life as a film journalist. In between there was cooking and eating together, and networking in a cottage by the Bystrzyckie lake. Expert for this edition was the Greek critic Manolis Kranakis.

After an introduction circle on Friday night, the screening programme kicked off on Saturday with STRIKING LAND by Raul Domingues and talking to the Portuguese director about the film which follows the oldest members of a rural community. Next was VOICE by Ane Hjorth Guttu which takes a different kind of look at documentary filmmaking. The Norwegian director is a teacher herself and she brought art theory writing as such into the discussion.

After breakfast on Sunday, the group watched TOTEM by Lila Avilés. The Mexican director was happy to share her experiences with film criticism and audiences in general. The final film was IMAGO by Olga Chajdas from Poland. The director and the group started a passionate discussion about the way you relate to plot and characters in a film.

The participants were Ramona Aristide (Romania), Maria Dutkiewicz (Poland), Cas Hoekstra (the Netherlands), Oleksandra Kalinichenko (Ukraine), Silvia Mariscal (Spain), Anton Vanha-Majamaa (Finland), Maciek Satora (Poland) and Chiara Zuccari (Italy).

The project was organised by the European Film Academy and New Horizons Association with the support of the Polish Film Institute, the local cultural institutes and the Krzysztof Mętrak competition for young film critics.
