Baščaršija (Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Baščaršija (Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Built in the 15th century as a trading and mercantile centre, Baščaršija has also served as shooting location for numerous films, like BORN TWICE (2012), directed by Sergio Castellitto, NOT SO FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD AFFAIR (2021) by Danis Tanović, HOP SKIP AND JUMP (2000) by Srđan Vuletić, HUNTING PARTY (2007) by Richard Shepard, GRBAVICA (2006) by Jasmila Žbanić and many more.
Located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, Baščaršija is one of the most popular parts of the city – among tourists, but is also very present in the lives of locals. In Baščaršija, there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (built in 1530) and Sahat-kula. It is also the home of the Old Orthodox Church (built in 1539) and Sefardi Old Synagogue and Jewish Museum (built in 1581). It spreads from the Vijećnica city hall (pseudo-moorish style building built in 1894) in the East to the vicinity of the gothic Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral (built in 1887) in the West.
