    Malta Film Studios

Established in 1964, the Malta Film Studios were developed to support the filming of maritime scenes in international film productions. With its calm weather, long daylight hours, and crystal-clear seas, Malta has always offered an ideal setting for filmmaking. What truly set it apart, however, were its pioneering water tanks — some of the largest and most advanced in the world — and a range of SFX machines designed to create realistic storms in a fully controlled environment.

The studio’s facilities, which today include three water tanks, allow directors to simulate open-sea scenes without venturing into unpredictable waters. This innovation firmly placed Malta on the global cinematic map, especially for productions requiring dramatic ocean settings. Over the years, Malta has attracted numerous international filmmakers, drawn by the unique combination of the Maltese Islands’ natural beauty, the studios’ technical infrastructure, and the depth of local expertise.
