    Mourning Alain Delon

After his 1960 breakthrough as Tom Ripley in PLEIN SOLEIL by René Clément and as Rocco Parondi in Luchino Visconti’s ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS, Alain Delon quickly became one of the most popular stars of European cinema.

He worked again with Luchino Visconti on THE LEOPARD (1963) after the novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa and alongside Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale. In 1967 he played next to Lino Ventura in THE LAST ADVENTURE by Robert Enrico and in Jean-Pierre Melville’s THE GODSON, forever defining his image as the elegant but ice-cold killer in a trench coat.

Another highlight in his career came in 1969 as the young lover Jean-Paul in SWIMMING POOL by Jacques Deray, next to his former  partner Romy Schneider.

Again a gangster, Alain Delon played in THE SICILIAN CLAN next to Jean Gabin and Lino Ventura, in BORSALINO with Jean-Paul Belmondo and in THE RED CIRCLE with Yves Montand.

In recognition of his career, Alain Delon received a Special David (1972), the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1995, a Lifetime Achievement Award in Locarno (2012) and the Honorary Golden Palm in Cannes 2019.

Alain Delon passed away on 18 August in his home in Douchy, France. His performances as the smart but dangerous gangster will remain forever.
