Belgian Actress Passes Away at the Age of 43

Born in 1981 in the Belgian city of Belœil, Émilie Dequenne had her acting breakthrough in ROSETTA by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne in 1999. The film won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and earned her the festival’s Best Actress Award as well as a nomination for the European Film Awards.
She has acted in more than 50 films, among them BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF by Christophe Gans (2001), GIRL ON THE TRAIN by André Téchiné (2009) and LOVE AFFAIR(S) by Emmanuel Mouret (2020).
Émilie Dequenne returned to Cannes’ “Un certain regard” with Joachim Lafosse’s OUR CHILDREN (2012). Her impressive performance alongside Taher Rahim earned her the section’s Best Actress Award, another nomination for the European Film Awards and a Belgian Magritte Award.
She appeared in the 2013 thriller MÖBIUS by Éric Rochant, with Jean Dujardin and Cécile de France, as the nurse Pauline Duhez alongside André Dussollier in THIS IS OUR LAND by Lucas Belvaux (2017) and as Sophie, the mother of young Rémi in CLOSE by Lukas Dhont (2022).
Émilie Dequenne died of a rare cancer on Sunday, 16 March.
